Tips For Using Your Tax Refund 2014

The Australian Tax Return Deadline 2014 is 31 October. Lodge today to receive your tax refund 2014.

If you’ve already lodged your Australian tax return, you may have already received your tax refund or you’re waiting for the ATO to deposit it into your account.

If  you still need to lodge, you’ll want to do so as soon as possible. The deadline is 31 October. The sooner you lodge, the sooner you’ll be able to put your refund money to use.

Whether you’ve already lodged your 2013-2014 tax return or still need to do so, it’s best to use your refund wisely. After all, it’s money you’ve worked hard for throughout the financial year.

7 Different Ways To Use Your Refund

Don’t spend your refund money all in one place. Use a portion to invest, another portion to donate and remember to live a little and treat yourself along the way!

Here’s seven ways worth using your tax refund on;

1. Pay Off Debt

If you have credit card or loan debt (or both), then you know first hand that the longer you may off your balance, the more you’ll end up paying in interest. Using your tax refund money to pay off credit card or loan debt means you’ll reduce the total amount of interest incurred.

Even if you can’t pay the entire balance, using your refund money towards a large payment means your usual monthly payments will decrease.

2. Invest

Investing your refund money will benefit you in the long term. Sure, investing the money isn’t as “fun” as splurging on a shopping trip would be but it could be the start of your child’s education fund or a stock investment that could pay off later on.

3. Open a High Interest Savings Account

What If I Miss the Tax Deadline 2015?

31 October doesn’t only mark the day of scary costumes and lots of candy. It’s also the tax deadline 2015.

The tax deadline 2015 is 31 October. That means, your 2014-2015 tax return is considered late as of 1 November 2015.

It also means some tax services like etax will shut down.

Don’t worry. Even if you can’t make the deadline, you can still prepare your tax return online with E-Lodge.

You may face a ‘failure to lodge on time’ penalty

Not lodging your tax return on time means the ATO could apply a failure to lodge on time penalty.

However, just because you’re lodging late doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll face the ATO penalty. You’ll only face the failure to lodge on time penalty if you fall within one of the three following categories;

  1. you have more than one tax return outstanding
  2. you have a poor lodgement history
  3. you have not complied with a request from the ATO to lodge

In other words, if you’ve avoided lodging past tax returns, you won’t have much of a leg to stand on.  Read the rest of this entry »

It’s time to lodge your 2014 taxes.

What does that mean exactly? It means you need to report the income you received between 1 July 2013 and 30 June 2014. It also means you might end up receiving a tax refund or paying tax due.

To avoid any surprises, you can get a quick estimate of your 2014 tax refund or tax due with the E-Lodge tax calculator before actually doing your taxes.

Australian Tax Rates 2013-2014

Tax rates and the tax-free threshold are the same as last year. In other words, if the details to your tax return haven’t changed much since you completed your 2013 tax return, then your refund or tax due probably won’t either.

After lodging, you can check the progress of your 2015 tax return online!

In other words, if you recently lodged your 2014 tax return, you’ll be able to see it’s progress.

Instead of waiting on the phone to speak with a live representative, you can get a quick update on the status of your return online 24 hours a day, seven days a week after lodging your taxes.  Not only that, but E-Lodge also offers it’s users their own status page, allowing them to view the exact date the ATO accepted their tax return.
